Position requires an individual with engineering knowledge and design experience in a specialized area of expertise. Performs design, programming, function in field assignment role, or other tasks requiring technical engineering judgment and decisions. Incumbent is also developing their technical specialty skills and/or leadership skills. Person is developing specialized expertise through additional schooling or study as well as practical experience. Focused on becoming an expert in that specialty, capable of independent design and consultation. Person is also developing a working knowledge of engineering discipline functions other than their own for the purpose of coordinating with other departments, engineering managers, field personnel and clients. This knowledge will be applied in reviewing designs and resolving areas of concern between disciplines.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
This is a mid level pipe designer position where the candidate is expected to be very knowledgeable in and able to perform drafting and design in one or more of the following Mechanical design and drafting areas related to industrial power generation projects: equipment layout, Piping & Instrument Diagrams (P&ID's), piping layout, and piping support. The candidate must have fundamental piping knowledge and pipe routing skills. Candidate must be able to read P&IDs and route complete large bore and small bore piping systems from P&ID's and vendor equipment data. Additionally, the candidate must also have a basic knowledge of pipe support systems and pipe support types for cold and hot systems and the ability to read and understand vendor drawings for tanks, equipment valves, etc. Responsibilities include, ensuring the design layout and drawings are complete and meet Black & Veatch requirements and all applicable codes and standards. Design layout and drawings shall be compliant with recommended practices, sketches, notes and any written or verbal instructions given, as well as all project design requirements.
Minimum Qualifications:
This position requires a minimum of 8 years of experience with an Associate of Applied Science Degree, or a minimum of 10 years experience with a Drafting Diploma. Candidate must be experienced in AutoCAD software (version 2010 preferred). MicroStation software experience is a plus. Experience with three dimensional pipe modeling software packages is preferred but not required. Good verbal and written communication skills. Excellent coordination skills required. Teamwork is essential. Candidate must be able to work well with technicians, engineers, and support staff from within the discipline as well as other engineering disciplines. Microsoft Windows, Excel and Word experience desired.
